President and Chief Financial Advisor, Regional Director

Gus has been an avid follower of the financial markets since he was 12 years old and first learned how to read stock quotes in the newspaper. He immediately latched on and began managing a hypothetical portfolio in a notebook using real stock prices. Many days saw him running home from the school bus stop in order to check the quotes and adjust his portfolio values to see if he would have made money if he was actually using a real account. He was the only one of his friends that knew what he was going to do for a career even before entering High School. He also had the drive of an entrepreneur at a very young age. He opened his first formal business, a non-alcoholic dance club for teens, at the age of 17 while also using the equipment there to run a second venture hiring himself out as a DJ for local school and church dances.

With investing and finance in his blood, he started in the financial advisory business at a very young age and has been a registered Financial Consultant since 1991, when he was 19 years old. He started his career as a stockbroker and portfolio manager for a commodities limited partnership in Colorado Springs, CO. He went on to become the firm’s Options Principal and OSJ Branch Manager during his first year there.

After spending several years in the commodities and options business, Gus decided that the client-focused arena of Financial Planning and Asset Management was the field in which he wanted to work.

He joined Financial Network in 1996 as Regional Manager of the Rocky Mountain Region. Gus also served as the Chief Compliance Officer for Lighthouse Financial, LLC From 1999 to 2006. In that year, Gus decided to focus on his growing private practice and left his management positions so that he could dedicate 100% of his time to his clientele. He established Fox-Smith Wealth Management, LLC, which now operates as FS Advisors Wealth Management, to achieve this goal.  In the years since launching FSWM, we have grown from a staff of 2 to a current team of 11 professionals who are committed to delivering high touch financial services to over 1400 families who have entrusted us with their assets. Since we do not advertise or do any marketing, our rapid growth has resulted almost entirely from the referrals of our existing satisfied client family.

Gus wanted to share his knowledge with other advisors so he went back into a management role by becoming a Cetera Regional Director in 2008. In serving his clients and the advisors in his Region, the need for quality assistance in the transition process was obvious while the sources to get such advice were extremely limited and lacking real world experience.  To address this need, he began educating advisors nationwide about transitioning their practices and has purchased numerous practices as a result.  Mr. Fox-Smith has additionally acted as a retained consultant to scores of buyers and sellers who desired help in structuring their transitions, pricing their practices, or negotiating contracts.

In his years of experience, Gus has helped his clients and advisors pursue their financial and career goals in nearly every financial arena. He works closely with his client’s other professional advisors in order to help accomplish the best outcomes with limited risk exposure. His approach is truly client centered. He firmly believes that the attainment of his client’s goals is the only thing that matters in the financial planning process.

Gus is an avid supporter of many national and local charities including Operation Underground Railroad, Denver Rescue Mission, Boulder County Safehouse, Amnesty International, Bessie’s Hope, and Freedom From Hunger, just to name a few. He also offers his time to teach age appropriate concepts of finance and economic principles to kids in Elementary, Middle, and High Schools across the Front Range and personally created a year long program called The Stock Market Game as a fun and engaging means to deliver financial education to school aged kids..

Gus lives in Broomfield with his wife, Erin, and their children, a very artistic and creative daughter currently training to prepare for auditions with Cirque Du Soleil in a few years, and an analytical son who is currently attending the Colorado School of Mines. They are all Colorado natives and cannot see themselves living anywhere else. They enjoy traveling, skiing, geocaching, and camping in the beautiful Colorado backcountry.
